Why Sofia for a Stag Do? 6 Reasons UK Groups Pick It

UK groups pick Sofia for a stag do because the numbers stack up. Bulgaria has the EU's lowest going-out prices, and Sofia has direct flights from 9 UK airports, clubs that only fill after midnight and mountains close enough for a day on a raft. Here are the 6 reasons, the official figures behind each one, and the groups who would be better off booking somewhere else.

Quick summary

  • Bulgaria had the EU's lowest price level for restaurants and accommodation in 2025, 55.7 against an EU average of 100.
  • Direct flights reach Sofia from 9 UK airports in about 3 to 3.5 hours, over an hour longer than Prague.
  • Sofia's clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am.
  • Rafting and quad biking in the mountains each make a 6 to 8 hour day, so groups who want one add a 3rd night.
  • Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026, and UK visitors need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180.
  • Our packages cost €134, €274 or €558 per person with the airport transfer included; flights and the hotel sit on top.

1. Bulgaria has the EU's lowest going-out prices

Price is where most groups start, and the official data backs it up. In Eurostat's 2025 price level indices, Bulgaria scores 55.7 for restaurants and accommodation, the category that covers rounds at the bar, meals out and hotel rooms. The EU average is 100, so that is about 44% below it and the lowest of all 27 member states.

Across everything a household buys, Bulgaria sits at 62.5 and the UK at 123.3, so Bulgaria's overall price level is about half the UK's.

Going-out prices and flights, Sofia against the usual stag cities (price levels are national figures)

Sofia (Bulgaria)55.73h00Euro

Budapest (Hungary)82.42h25Forint
Riga (Latvia)87.42h30Euro
Berlin (Germany)108.41h45Euro
Amsterdam (Netherlands)119.91h20Euro

On that measure Bulgaria is the cheapest of the cheapest stag do destinations in the EU, and Czechia, the next lowest of the usual stag countries, sits 13.8 points higher. The trade-off is the flight: Sofia is the longest of the 8 from London, 70 minutes further than Prague.

Our packages fix the biggest part of the bill before anyone flies: €134, €274 or €558 per person, airport transfer included. Each of you books your own flight, and we quote the hotel for the group.

2. Direct flights from 9 UK airports

Sofia is further than Prague or Krakow, about 3 to 3.5 hours in the air, and Wizz Air puts Luton to Sofia at 3 hours 10 minutes on average. What it offers instead is spread. Direct routes leave from London, the Midlands, the South West, the North West and Scotland, which matters when the lads live in 4 different cities.

The MidlandsBirmingham3h10
The South WestBristol3h10
The North WestLiverpool, Manchester3h20 from Liverpool
ScotlandEdinburgh3h30

Sofia is 2 hours ahead of the UK all year, so a flight that leaves at 18:00 lands at about 23:00 local time, in time for a first drink and the clubs, which only fill after midnight.

From our planners

Book the flights before anything else. Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh fly to Sofia only 2 or 3 days a week, and on different days, so check those routes first and pick the dates round them; the lads who cannot match fly from Stansted instead, which has about 2 flights a day.

3. Nights that run into the early hours

Sofia goes out late. The clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am, so a stag night here runs dinner at 8pm, a guided bar crawl with welcome shots at most stops, then the club once it has filled up.

The bigger clubs work on booked tables and a dress code of shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes, and trainers get turned away. Stay central and the hotels we book for stag groups are all a walk from the bars and clubs, so nobody is hunting for a taxi at 4am.

4. Rafting and quad biking in the mountains

We book 46 activities in and around Sofia, and the city covers the stag staples: go-karting, paintball, a shooting range and an escape room. What sets it apart is the mountains. The big activity days are out of town, on mountain rivers and trails, with transport and a Bulgarian lunch included.

A day of white-water rafting is 4 to 6 hours on the river, and quad biking runs 3 to 4 hours on the trails. Each is a 6 to 8 hour day once the drive is counted, which is why groups who want one add a 3rd night to the standard 2-night weekend.

5. Euros in your wallet and no visa

Bulgaria switched to the euro on 1 January 2026, and the FCDO's entry advice for Bulgaria confirms the old lev stopped being accepted at the end of that month. Prague, Krakow and Budapest still run on koruna, zloty and forint, so Sofia is the one city of the 4 where the euros left over from a Spanish holiday still work.

UK visitors need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, though a first entry may mean fingerprints and a photo at an Entry/Exit System booth, so allow extra time at passport control.

Check both dates on every passport

A UK passport has to pass 2 tests for Bulgaria: issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave. The FCDO says travellers without a valid travel document are denied entry, so a lad who fails either test turns round at the airport with his weekend already paid for.

6. Bulgaria gets fewer UK visitors than Czechia, Poland or Hungary

The ONS survey of UK residents' visits abroad counted 350,000 UK holiday visits to Bulgaria in 2024, against 441,000 to Czechia, 448,000 to Hungary and 791,000 to Poland. UK guests also stay longer in Bulgaria: Eurostat's accommodation figures for 2024 give them 5.1 nights per arrival, against 2.4 to 2.7 in Poland, Czechia and Hungary.

Most UK visits to Bulgaria are beach and ski weeks, so a Sofia city weekend is still unfamiliar ground for most groups. That includes the city's past: a communist-era tour with a guide who knew the old regime first-hand spends 3 to 4 hours on Soviet-style monuments and the former secret police headquarters.

Who Sofia suits, and who should go elsewhere

Sofia is at its best for these groups:

  • Big groups on a tight budget: the €134 Cheap-Ass package covers a bar crawl, an escape room, bowling, a food tasting and airport transfers.
  • Lads spread across the UK: 9 airports from Stansted to Edinburgh let most of the group fly from near home.
  • Groups who want an activity day, not a beach: rafting, quad biking, outdoor karting and paintball.
  • Mixed ages: dads and uncles get the stag dinner, a spa morning or the communist tour, and can skip the club.
  • Late finishers: the clubs only get going after midnight.

It is the wrong call for these:

  • A beach weekend: Sofia is inland, and Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts are on the far side of the country.
  • The shortest flight going: Amsterdam is 1h20 from Gatwick, Berlin 1h45 from Stansted and Prague 1h50, against 3h00 to Sofia.
  • An outdoor weekend in midwinter: January's long-term average high is 2.2°C, so a plan built on quads, karting and rafting belongs in the warmer months.

Before you pitch Sofia to the group

  • Everyone's passport issue and expiry dates collected in the group chat and checked against the travel dates
  • Each lad's nearest airport, and the days its Sofia route flies
  • The groom's share agreed and split across the rest of the group
  • Days in other Schengen countries in the last 180 days counted for anyone who travels a lot
  • Travel insurance for everyone, covering rafting or quad biking if either is booked
  • Original ID or a passport for the bar crawl, not a photocopy

Questions the group chat asks

Is Sofia good for a lads holiday?

Yes, for a city weekend built on late nights and one big activity day. The clubs peak around 2 to 3am, there are 46 activities to book, and Bulgaria's going-out prices are the lowest in the EU. For sun loungers and a pool bar, Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is a different trip.

What is special about Sofia?

For a stag group, it is a capital city with a mountain day on the menu. Rafting on mountain rivers and quad biking on mountain trails are day trips out of town, and the group is back in time for clubs that peak around 2 to 3am.

Which UK airports have direct flights to Sofia?

There are 9: London Stansted, Luton, Heathrow and Gatwick, plus Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Edinburgh. Stansted has about 2 Ryanair flights a day, while Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh run 2 or 3 a week.

Why is Sofia famous?

It is Bulgaria's capital and biggest city, known for the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, its communist-era monuments and Vitosha mountain on its southern edge. For a stag group, the bigger draw is price: Bulgaria's going-out prices are the lowest in the EU.

Is Sofia or Sunny Beach better for a stag do?

Sofia, for a city weekend of late clubs and a mountain activity day; Sunny Beach only if the plan is a summer week by the sea. Sunny Beach is a seaside resort on the Black Sea coast, on the far side of Bulgaria from Sofia.
