Sofia Stag Do in Summer: What June to August Looks Like

A Sofia stag do in summer runs on warm afternoons, light until 9pm in June and July, and nights that start outside before the clubs fill after midnight. It also means planning round the heat and a June that brings more rain than the rest of the summer. Here is what each summer month is like, which one suits your group, the outdoor days worth booking and how to time a Saturday so everyone is still standing at 3am.
Quick summary
- Sofia's long-term average high is 23.5°C in June and about 26°C in July and August, with nights of 12 to 14°C, and heatwaves above 30°C do happen.
- June averages 13 rain days and is one of Sofia's 2 wettest months, while August has 8 rain days and September 7.
- The sun sets around 9pm from June to mid-July and just after 8pm on 1 September, so a June or July stag dinner starts in daylight.
- Summer is the season for the water days: rafting takes 6 to 8 hours including the drive, and waterjets 2 to 3 hours on the water plus the drive to the lake.
- Put the activity in the morning, the pool or a sleep in the hottest hours, dinner at 8.30pm and the club from 1.30am, when Sofia's clubs are filling up.
- The FCDO says Bulgaria is on regular wildfire alert in summer and early autumn, and advises booking water sports only at a licensed centre.
Sofia's summer weather, month by month
Summer in Sofia is warm rather than scorching. Long-term averages from Bulgaria's national met service, published by the World Meteorological Organization, look like this for the 3 summer months and September:
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain days | Sunset mid-month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June | 23.5°C | 12.1°C | 13 | About 21:05 |
| July | 25.9°C | 13.8°C | 10 | About 21:05 |
| August | 26.0°C | 13.4°C | 8 | About 20:30 |
| September | 22.6°C | 10.4°C | 7 | About 19:40 |
Those are 1961 to 1990 averages, the most recent set the WMO publishes for Sofia, and heatwaves above 30°C do happen in July and August. Plan the weekend as if one will land on yours.
The nights are the pleasant surprise. Lows average 12 to 14°C across the summer, so the walk back to the hotel at 4am is cool even after a hot afternoon.
June, July, August or early September
- June: the longest evenings of the year and an average high of 23.5°C, but also 75mm of rain over 13 days, which makes it one of Sofia's 2 wettest months along with May. The outdoor go-karting track runs in the rain, so a wet Saturday just means a slippier race.
- July: about 26°C with 10 rain days, and the sun still setting after 9pm in the first half of the month. The afternoons are for being in water or out of the sun.
- August: the warmest and driest of the 3, at 26.0°C and 8 rain days, with sunset back to about 20:30 by the middle of the month.
- Early September: for a group that wants summer weather without the heat, the best time for a Sofia stag do. The month averages 22.6°C with 7 rain days, and the sun sets just after 8pm on the 1st.
From our planners
For a June weekend, put the outdoor activity on Saturday, not Sunday. If a storm rules out the karting or the paintball, Sunday morning is still there to move it to before the flight home.
Summer activities worth booking
Summer opens up the outdoor side of a Sofia stag do: rivers for rafting, lakes for jet-powered kit and mountains within 2 hours of the centre.
| Activity | Time it takes | Why it suits summer |
|---|---|---|
| White-water rafting | 6 to 8 hours with the drive | Warmer water and gentler flows than in spring |
| Kayaking | 6 to 8 hours with the drive | Rivers and lakes, with lunch by the water |
| Waterjets | 2 to 3 hours on the water, plus the drive to the lake | Racing on open water, soaked from the first run |
| Flyboarding | 60 to 90 minutes including instruction, plus the drive | The shortest water session, so it pairs with an afternoon at the pool |
| Rila Lakes or Rila Monastery day trip | Full day, 1.5 to 2 hours' drive each way | Mountain trails and lunch at a lodge |
| Pool and spa | 4 to 5 hours | A private group area through the hottest hours |
A white-water rafting day is the big one. In summer the rivers run warmer and gentler than in spring, when the water is higher and the rapids tougher, and with the drive into the mountains and a riverside lunch it fills most of a day, so it earns a 3rd night on the trip.

Waterjet racing and flyboarding run on lakes and reservoirs, and the FCDO's advice is to book water sports at a licensed centre, finish the paperwork and ask for a safety demonstration before anyone gets on.
A day trip to the Seven Rila Lakes swaps the city streets for mountain trails. The FCDO also notes that Bulgaria is on regular alert for wildfires in summer and early autumn, with fast-spreading fires in forests and fields, and says to follow the local authorities' instructions if one breaks out nearby.
Of our 3 packages, the Legendary at €274 a head puts 2 outdoor activities on the plan, go-karting and paintball, alongside a beer tasting tour, a stag dinner and a VIP pub crawl. The €134 Cheap-Ass keeps the group indoors with an escape room and bowling.
Check the insurance covers the outdoor day
The FCDO's travel insurance guidance says jet skiing is not usually included in standard policies and some adventure activities need an add-on, so check the wording names waterjets and white-water rafting before booking. If it does not, whoever gets hurt pays his own hospital bill. The Rila Lakes hike is a mountain day, and for mountain activities the FCDO advises cover for mountain rescue, helicopter costs and repatriation. A GHIC does not replace any of that: it does not cover repatriation or private clinics, and many private hospitals in Bulgaria do not accept it.
A heat-proof Saturday in Sofia
In summer the Saturday of a 48-hour Sofia stag weekend is built round the heat: the activity moves to the morning and the hottest hours go to water, shade or sleep. This is the shape we plan around in July and August.
| Time | What | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Breakfast and a litre of water each | Friday night is still in the system |
| 09:30 | Outdoor karting or paintball, plus the drive there and back | Done before the worst of the heat, and before anyone has had a drink |
| 14:30 | Lunch, then 4 hours at the pool and spa, or a sleep | The hottest part of the day, spent in water or indoors |
| 20:30 | Stag dinner | Still light outside in June and July |
| 22:30 | Guided bar crawl, 3 to 4 hours | It finishes at the club, with entry included |
| 01:30 | The club at the end of the crawl | Sofia's clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am |
The pool and spa session runs 4 to 5 hours in a private group area. Keep it to 4 here, which covers the afternoon heat and leaves time to change before dinner.
Summer nights out in Sofia
Summer nights start outside, with the first drinks on a terrace, and move indoors once the clubs fill after midnight.
The door rules do not relax for the heat. Sofia's clubs want a dress shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes, and trainers or casual gear do not get past the door, whether or not the group has a VIP table booked.
From our planners
Pack one pair of proper trousers and leather shoes, even in August. Every summer somebody lands with nothing but shorts and flip-flops, and he spends Saturday night either back at the hotel or hunting for a shoe shop at 7pm.
Packing for a summer stag do in Sofia
- Sun cream and sunglasses for the activity morning
- Swim shorts for the pool, the river or the lake
- Sandals or water shoes that strap on, for rafting
- A dress shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes for the club
- A light layer for the walk home, when lows average 12 to 14°C
- A refillable water bottle for the activity day
Questions the group chat asks
Is Bulgaria too hot in July?
Not in Sofia. The city's long-term average high in July is 25.9°C, with nights around 14°C, though heatwaves above 30°C do happen. Book the activity for the morning and keep the afternoon for the pool, and the heat is easy to live with.
What is the best month for a summer stag do in Sofia?
June for the longest evenings, August for the fewest rain days of the 3 summer months, and early September for warm weather with less heat. July and August are the warmest, at about 26°C on average.
Does it rain in Sofia in summer?
Yes, mostly in June. June averages 75mm of rain over 13 days, one of Sofia's 2 wettest months along with May, while August drops to 51mm over 8 days. A June trip needs a fallback plan for any outdoor activity.
Is 2 days enough in Sofia?
Yes: 2 nights covers a stag do in Sofia, with a night out when you land, the activity and the big night on Saturday, and a slow Sunday. Add a 3rd night if the group wants rafting or a Rila day trip, since each one takes most of a day.
Is Bulgaria cheaper than the UK?
Yes, by a wide margin. In Eurostat's 2025 price level indices, Bulgaria's household prices stand at 62.5 against the UK's 123.3, where 100 is the EU average, so roughly half. Bulgaria also has the EU's lowest price level for restaurants and hotels, though these are national figures rather than Sofia prices.
Is Sofia good for a lads holiday in summer?
For a weekend of nights out and outdoor days, yes; for a beach, no. Sofia is an inland capital and the Black Sea resorts are a long drive east, so a beach week and a Sofia stag do are 2 different trips.
