September is the best month for a Sofia stag do. The afternoons are still warm, rain is at its lowest of the year, and every outdoor activity we book is running. The rest of the year works too if you plan for it, so here is Sofia's weather month by month, what each season does to the activity day, and what to check before you fix the date.

Quick summary

 • September is the best all-round month, with an average high of 22.6°C, 7 rain days and the sun setting after 8pm at the start of the month.
 • May and June are Sofia's wettest months, with 14 and 13 rain days on average, so any outdoor activity needs an indoor fallback.
 • July and August average highs of about 26°C, heatwaves above 30°C do happen, and outdoor activities go best in the morning.
 • Average highs from December to February sit between 2°C and 5°C, which suits a weekend of bars, clubs and indoor activities rather than the mountains.
 • Our packages cost €134, €274 or €558 per person, and the €134 Cheap-Ass is made up entirely of indoor activities.

The best month for a Sofia stag do

September. The long-term average high is 22.6°C, warm enough for a terrace lunch without the heat of high summer, and its 7 rain days tie with October as the driest of the year. The sun still sets after 8pm at the start of the month, so Saturday's activity finishes in daylight with hours to spare.

Karting, paintball, rafting and quad biking are all running, and nobody needs a coat for the Friday bar crawl. If September clashes with the wedding, June and the first half of October come closest: June for the long evenings, October for the dry weather.

These are long-term averages from Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, published by the World Meteorological Organization for Sofia. They cover 1961 to 1990, the newest set for the city, so read them as a normal month rather than a forecast.

Spring: March to May

March is still cold, with an average high of 9.8°C and nights around freezing, so a March stag do is a city weekend of bars, tastings, an escape room and the club. April warms to 15.7°C and brings the outdoor activities back, and May reaches 20.3°C but has the most rain days of the year.

Spring brings the rivers up, which means higher water and tougher rapids for rafting than in summer. Rain is the other thing to plan around. Outdoor go-karting and paintball both carry on in the rain, and only a storm stops them.

Summer: June to August

Summer has the longest evenings of the year. In late June the sun sets after 9pm, so the group can eat outside and still have daylight on the walk to the first bar. The average high climbs from 23.5°C in June to about 26°C in July and August, and heatwaves above 30°C do happen.

June is still wet, with 13 rain days on average, while August has only 8. By then the rivers have dropped and rafting runs warmer, with gentler rapids. A Sofia stag do in summer works best with the activity booked for the morning, a long lunch in the shade, and the night out as normal.

From our planners

In July and August, book the outdoor activity for a 10am start. The group is off the karting track or out of the paintball woods before the worst of the heat, and nobody turns up to the stag dinner sunburnt and dehydrated.

Autumn: September to November

September leads the year, and October keeps the dry weather going: 7 rain days on average and a high of 16.6°C, which is proper karting and paintball weather. The light goes quicker, with sunset just before 7pm by mid-October, so start the activity by late morning to finish it in daylight.

A 3rd night in September leaves room for a day trip to Rila Monastery or the Seven Rila Lakes, 1.5 to 2 hours on the road each way, with the guides keeping an indoor fallback in case the mountain weather turns.

November drops to an average high of 9.6°C and the outdoor season winds down, but Ryanair adds flights from some regional airports: its Liverpool schedule goes from 12 Sofia flights in October 2026 to 22 in November, and Birmingham from 10 to 13.

Winter: December to February

Winter in Sofia is cold. January averages a high of 2.2°C and a low of -4.9°C, and in December the sun sets just before 5pm. None of that changes the night out, which happens indoors anyway, from the first bar to the club.

Build the day around indoor activities instead of the mountains. An indoor ski slope gives the group 2 to 3 hours on real snow with instructors, and escape rooms, bowling, VR gaming and the rakia and beer tastings run whatever the weather does outside. The Cheap-Ass package is built entirely from indoor activities (a guided bar crawl, an escape room, bowling and a Bulgarian food tasting), which makes it the natural winter pick at €134 a head.

Flights change with the season too. easyJet's Gatwick route to Sofia showed fares only from December 2026 to April 2027, so for now it only helps a winter or early-spring date.

Which activities suit which season

Check your airport's flight days before fixing the weekend

Outside London, direct flights to Sofia do not run daily. Ryanair's autumn 2026 schedules show about 2 a week from Edinburgh and 2 to 3 from Birmingham and Bristol, so the Friday-to-Sunday weekend the group agreed on may not exist from your airport. Fix the date around the flight days, or pay for an extra hotel night for everyone or a trip down to Stansted.

Passport validity and final checks

The date also decides whether every passport passes. Under the FCDO's entry rules for Bulgaria, a UK passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and stay valid for 3 months after you leave, so check each one against the actual travel dates.

From our planners

Pick the month before the activity. A group that falls for rafting and then books February gets a plan it never wanted; fix the weekend first, then choose from what that month does well.

Before you fix the date

 • A return flight on the Sunday you picked, not just an outbound on the Friday
 • Issue and expiry dates for every lad's passport collected in the group chat
 • The stag's Friday off work confirmed before anyone books
 • A 3rd night added if rafting, quad biking or a day trip is on the plan
 • Final numbers sent to us, so we can quote the hotel for your dates

Questions the group chat asks

What is the best month for a stag do in Sofia?

September. The average high is 22.6°C, there are only 7 rain days on average, and every outdoor activity is running. June and early October are the next best.

Is Sofia a cheap city to visit?

Yes by EU standards. Eurostat's 2025 price level indices put Bulgaria's restaurants and hotels at 55.7, where 100 is the EU average, the lowest of the 27 member states. That puts Bulgaria first among the cheapest stag do destinations in the EU, ahead of Romania at 59.4 and Czechia at 69.5.

Is Sofia good for a stag do in winter?

Yes, if the plan lives indoors. With January averaging a high of 2.2°C, swap the mountains for the indoor ski slope, bowling or a tasting, and the nights out carry on as normal.

Is March a good time for a Sofia stag do?

For a city weekend, yes. March averages a high of 9.8°C with nights around freezing, so it suits bars, tastings and indoor activities, and outdoor karting and paintball come into their own from April.

Does the time of year change how many nights to book?

It can. From late spring to early autumn a 3rd night makes room for rafting or quad biking, each a full day of 6 to 8 hours including travel. In winter, when the plan is indoors, the standard 2-night weekend from Friday to Sunday covers everything.
