Sofia Stag Do: The Complete Guide for UK Groups

A group of British men on a stag do walking down a pedestrian boulevard in central Sofia at dusk, the groom-to-be in the middle and Vitosha mountain behind them.

A Sofia stag do is a long weekend in Bulgaria's capital: a flight of 3 to 3.5 hours from the UK, a day of karting, paintball or shooting, and 2 late nights in a city whose clubs run until sunrise. Here is how to plan one for a UK group, from flights and costs to the nightlife rules and the passport checks to do before anyone books.

Quick summary

  • Direct flights to Sofia leave from 9 UK airports and take about 3 to 3.5 hours, and Sofia is 2 hours ahead of the UK all year.
  • The standard trip is 2 nights, Friday to Sunday, with a 3rd night added for rafting or quad biking, which take 6 to 8 hours including the drive.
  • Our packages cost €134, €274 or €558 per person and all include the airport transfer, while flights are booked by each of you and the hotel is quoted for the group.
  • Sofia's clubs fill after midnight, peak around 2 to 3am and turn away trainers and sportswear, so dress smart and book a table.
  • May to September is the warm season, with average highs of about 26°C in July and August, and September and October have the fewest rain days.
  • UK passports must be under 10 years old on arrival and valid 3 months after you leave, and a first entry may mean fingerprints and a photo under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Why Sofia works for a stag do

Sofia puts everything a stag weekend needs inside one compact city. The bars, restaurants and central hotels are close enough to walk between, the clubs keep going into the early hours, and the mountains around the city hold the rivers and trails for a day of rafting or quad biking. Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026, so there is no local currency to buy before you fly.

It also still feels new. Lads who have already done Prague, Krakow or Budapest for someone else's stag tend to pick Sofia over another repeat city, because nobody in the group has a story from it yet.

How many nights to book

The standard trip is 2 nights, Friday to Sunday: a night out when you land, an activity and a bigger night on Saturday, and a slow Sunday before the flight home. Most of the group only needs the Friday off work.

A 3rd night earns its place if the group wants white-water rafting or a day on the quads. Both are full days in the mountains, 6 to 8 hours including the drive, and squeezing one into a 2-night trip leaves no afternoon to recover before the Saturday night.

Flights from the UK to Sofia

Direct flights leave from 9 UK airports across the year, though easyJet's Gatwick route shows fares for December to April only. Ryanair's schedules put Stansted at 3 hours and Edinburgh at 3 hours 30, and Wizz Air gives an average of 3 hours 10 minutes from Luton.

Sofia is 2 hours ahead of the UK all year, because both switch to summer time on the same Sundays. A 3-hour flight that leaves at 17:00 lands at about 22:00 local time, still early enough for the first bar.

Metro line M4 runs from Terminal 2 to the centre in about 18 minutes, and a '30 plus' ticket costs €0.80, paid by tapping a bank card at the barrier. Land at Terminal 1 and a free shuttle bus runs to Terminal 2 around the clock. The airport's contracted taxi operator, Yellow!, has desks in arrivals at both terminals, and the FCDO warns that unlicensed airport taxis overcharge, so use the official desk and check the meter works before setting off. Every one of our packages includes the airport transfer, so most groups skip both.

Best time of year to go

May to September is the warm season. Long-term averages from Bulgaria's national met service, published by the World Meteorological Organization, give Sofia an average high of 20.3°C in May, about 26°C in July and August and 22.6°C in September. Heatwaves above 30°C do happen in high summer, and May and June are the wettest months.

For most groups the best month for a Sofia stag do is September: warm afternoons, 7 rain days on average and the sun still setting after 8pm at the start of the month. Winter and early spring weekends work for a trip built around bars and indoor activities, but March averages a high of 9.8°C and December light goes just before 5pm.

How much a Sofia stag do costs

The per-head cost has 3 parts: the package, the flights and the hotel. Our packages are fixed prices per person.

PackagePer personWhat's included
Cheap-Ass€134Guided bar crawl, escape room, bowling, Bulgarian food tasting, airport transfer
Legendary€274VIP pub crawl, outdoor go-karting, paintball, beer tasting tour, stag dinner, airport transfer
The VIP€558VIP pub crawl, John Wick shooting, VIP clubbing, strip club, outdoor go-karting, airsoft, stag dinner, rage room, pool and spa, whiskey tasting with cigars, party bus pickup, limo to the airport

Groups split between the cheap option and the blowout usually meet at the Legendary package: karting, paintball and a sit-down dinner for €105 more than the Cheap-Ass, at under half the price of The VIP. Flights sit on top, and each of you books your own, while we quote the hotel for the group. Drinks beyond the package are your own tab, and a 72-hour metro card is €7.60 if anyone wants to get around on the cheap.

Stag do activities in Sofia

We book 46 activities in and around Sofia, from paintball and go-karting to rakia tastings and a morning in a hotel spa. They fall into 6 groups.

TypeActivitiesExamples
Adrenaline and action15Paintball, shooting range, outdoor go-karting, airsoft, rafting, quad biking
Unique experiences9Escape room, rage room, VR gaming, hot air balloon flight, pilot lesson
Parties and nightlife5Guided bar crawl, VIP pub crawl, VIP clubbing, strip club, karaoke
Tasting and dining7Stag dinner, rakia tasting, beer tasting tour, wine tasting, whiskey and cigars
Culture and relaxation7Pool and spa, communist tour, day trips, magic show, hiking
Transfers3Airport minibus, party bus pickup, limo to the airport

The activity day comes with 2 rules. Shooting comes before any drinking: range sessions last 2 to 3 hours and the instructors expect everyone sober. And quad biking needs its own insurance, because the FCDO calls it an extreme sport, notes that the hire company's cover is usually third-party only, and warns that riders can be charged for any damage.

From our planners

Book the activity for Saturday late morning, before the first pint, and the group is back at the hotel with 4 or 5 hours to eat, sleep and shower before dinner. If it's shooting, go after a dry lunch instead: a 4am finish on Friday is still in the blood at 11.

Sofia nightlife for stag groups

Nights in Sofia start late. The clubs only fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am, so the evening runs dinner at 8pm, a guided bar crawl of 3 to 4 hours from about 10pm, and the club from 1am.

Dress for the door. Club staff want a shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes, and trainers, jeans or sportswear get turned away.

At a Sofia club door, a bouncer holds the rope for a smartly dressed group and stops their mate in trainers, a tracksuit top and cargo shorts.

The bigger clubs also work on table bookings. In our experience a group of 12 men turning up unbooked on a Saturday is usually refused, while a group with a VIP booth booked ahead has its own booth and a bottle of vodka waiting, as long as it arrives by 23:30. Smoking inside bars and clubs has been banned since 1 June 2012, and the fine falls on the smoker, not the venue.

Agree the price before anything is ordered

The FCDO warns that tourists in Sofia's so-called gentlemen's clubs have been overcharged by hundreds of pounds and threatened with violence when they refused to pay. Only go into a club we have booked with the price fixed in advance, never follow a tout off the street, and keep your card in sight when you pay.

A 2-night Sofia stag weekend

This is the shape of a 48-hour Sofia stag weekend that keeps the drinking and the activity apart.

  • Friday: land, transfer to the hotel, a traditional Bulgarian dinner, then a bar crawl that finishes in a club.
  • Saturday: a late breakfast, the activity, a rest at the hotel, the stag dinner at 8pm, one bar and a VIP table from about 12:30am.
  • Sunday: brunch, a pool and spa session or a walk to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, then the transfer to the airport.

Where to stay in Sofia

Stay central. The hotels we use for stag groups all sit within walking distance of the bars and clubs, which keeps the group together at 4am and the taxi spend down. There are 6 on our list, from budget to luxury, all quoted for the whole group once numbers and dates are fixed.

Passports, insurance and money

Bulgaria follows Schengen rules. Under the FCDO's entry rules for Bulgaria, a UK passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave, and you can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. The EU's Entry/Exit System is now being rolled out, so a first entry may mean giving fingerprints and a photo at a booth; allow extra time at passport control.

Always carry ID. The FCDO says a printed copy of your passport photo page will do, but our bar crawl wants original ID, so carry a photocard driving licence and leave the passport at the hotel. Drunk and disorderly behaviour may be treated more seriously than in the UK, and police can fine or arrest for loud behaviour or urinating in the street.

The FCDO says most ATMs take international cards and that cash of €10,000 or more must be declared. Its health advice is that a GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state treatment but is no substitute for travel insurance, and many private hospitals do not accept it.

Questions the group chat asks

Is Sofia good for a stag do?

Yes. Direct flights take about 3 to 3.5 hours from 9 UK airports, the bars, restaurants and hotels in the centre are close enough to walk between, and there are 46 activities to build the days around. It suits groups who want late nights and an activity day rather than a beach.

How much does a Sofia stag do cost per person?

Our packages cost €134, €274 or €558 per person, including the activities and the airport transfer. Flights and the hotel come on top: each of you books a flight, and we quote the hotel for the group. Drinks beyond the package are your own tab.

Is Sofia good for nightlife?

Yes, and it runs late. Clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am, and the bigger ones work on table bookings. Wear a shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes, or expect to be turned away.

How many nights should a Sofia stag do be?

Most groups book 2 nights, Friday to Sunday, which covers a night out, an activity day and a bigger Saturday night. Add a 3rd night for rafting or quad biking, which each take 6 to 8 hours including the drive.

Who usually pays for a stag do?

The groom usually goes free: each lad pays his own share, and the rest of the group splits the groom's costs between them. Agree that before anyone books, so the per-head price quoted to the group already includes his cut.

Do dads go on stag dos?

Often, and it is the groom's call. A dad or father-in-law who joins for the dinner and the activity, then heads back to the hotel before the club, gets the best of the weekend without the 4am finish.

How long is the flight from the UK to Sofia?

About 3 to 3.5 hours direct. Stansted and Heathrow are quickest at about 3 hours and Edinburgh longest at 3 hours 30, and Sofia is 2 hours ahead of the UK all year.

Do you need a visa for a stag do in Bulgaria?

No. UK visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid 3 months after you leave.
