Sofia Stag Weekend Itinerary: How to Spend 48 Hours

A Sofia stag weekend works best as 2 nights: fly out on Friday, 1 proper activity day, 2 big nights, home on Sunday. Below is the whole 48 hours by the clock, from the airport metro to the Saturday club table, with what needs booking before you fly, where each of our packages slots in, and what a third night adds.

Quick summary

 • Most UK flights take 3 to 3.5 hours and Sofia is 2 hours ahead, so a 13:00 departure lands around 18:00.
 • Friday is dinner and a bar crawl, Saturday the activity, stag dinner and club, Sunday recovery and the flight home.
 • Clubs fill after midnight and turn away trainers, so book Saturday's table and pack a shirt and leather shoes.
 • Nobody drinks before the shooting range, and quad biking needs travel insurance that covers it.
 • Our packages cost €134, €274 or €558 a head, with the hotel quoted per group.
 • A third night adds a full day for rafting, quad biking or a mountain day trip.

Friday: land, eat, bar crawl

Most UK routes to Sofia take 3 to 3.5 hours in the air, and Wizz Air's Luton flight runs about 3 hours 10 minutes, with Sofia 2 hours ahead of London. Add the two and the clock jumps 5 hours, so a 13:00 departure lands around 18:00. Anything landing by 19:00 keeps Friday dinner on the table.

For a group, the easy exit is our private airport transfer: a driver in arrivals with a name board and a minibus for 8 to 16 lads plus bags. Stragglers can take metro line M4 on a €0.80 ticket paid by bank card at the barrier. It leaves from beside Terminal 2 and reaches the centre in about 18 minutes, with a free 24/7 shuttle from Terminal 1. For a taxi, the FCDO says to use the official desk in arrivals, as unlicensed airport drivers have been overcharging.

Check in, shower and sit down by 20:30 in a mehana, a traditional Bulgarian tavern: grilled meat, shopska salad and a rakia to open the weekend. Our Bulgarian food tasting does the same job with a guide and 8 to 10 dishes in tasting portions.

From about 22:00 the guided bar crawl takes over. A local guide leads, welcome shots come at most stops, the drinking games are aimed at the groom, and the route finishes at a club with free entry, so nobody is stood on a corner at 1am.

From our planners

Keep Friday to the crawl. After a travel day and a 5-hour clock jump, most groups have one really big night in them, and it needs to be Saturday, when the dinner and the club table are already paid for. Whoever goes to 5am on Friday sleeps through the speeches.

Saturday: activity day, stag dinner and the club

Saturday starts late on purpose: breakfast at 10:30, a pickup around midday, and an afternoon activity that sweats out Friday. Each has a rule worth knowing before you pick.

ActivityWhat the group getsThe rule
Outdoor go-karting20 minutes on a 23-turn outdoor trackIt runs in the rain too
Paintball200 paintballs each, jumpsuits and helmets, on a site picked for your terrainAt least 6 players
Shooting rangePistols and rifles with instructors, beginners welcomeNobody drinks beforehand

Turning up sober is the rule that catches groups out, so the shooting range goes on the day after the lighter night: Saturday, provided Friday ends with the crawl. Outdoor karting and paintball both carry on in the wet, which matters because May and June are Sofia's wettest months.

The stag dinner at 20:00 is the centrepiece: a private room in a traditional restaurant, 3 courses, unlimited rakia, wine and beer, and 2 to 3 hours of food, drink and speeches that roast the groom.

Sofia's clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am, but a booked VIP booth is only held until 23:30, so leave dinner at 23:00 and head straight there. With a booth booked the group has a table waiting; in our experience, 12 unbooked lads on a Saturday usually do not get in. The door wants a shirt, proper trousers and leather shoes, never trainers.

Never walk into a strip club off the street

The FCDO warns that tourists in Sofia's so-called gentlemen's clubs have been overcharged by hundreds of pounds and threatened with violence when they refused to pay. If the night ends in one, book it through your planner with the price fixed before anyone sits down, and keep your card in sight when paying.

Sunday: recovery and the flight home

Check-out comes first on Sunday, so ask for a late one when the hotel is booked. After brunch, a pool and spa session is the proper hangover cure: pools, saunas and a private area for the group over 4 to 5 hours, so it needs a late-evening flight. A guided beer tasting round Sofia's craft beer bars counts as hair of the dog and runs just as long; with an earlier flight, the group settles into a long lunch.

Leave the centre about 3 hours before departure: with the EU's Entry/Exit System being rolled out across the Schengen area, the FCDO tells travellers to allow extra time at the border and before the departure gate. The metro back costs the same €0.80.

From our planners

Pick the Sunday flight before the Sunday plan. A flight before 15:00 leaves time for brunch and nothing else; one after 21:00 leaves room for a full spa session or the beer tasting. Anything in between gets a long lunch within a short walk of the bags.

Adding a third night

A third night means flying out on Thursday and taking Thursday and Friday off work, against just the Friday for 2 nights. It buys a full extra day, which the big outdoor trips from Sofia need.

The full-day options are white-water rafting on the mountain rivers outside Sofia, with 4 to 6 hours on the water, quad biking on guided mountain trails, or a day trip to Rila Monastery or the Seven Rila Lakes. Quad biking needs its own line on the insurance: the FCDO calls it an extreme sport and says the hire company's cover is usually third-party only. Put the big day on Friday and keep Saturday as above.

What to book before you fly

Tick these off at least a month out; the flights, dinner room and club table fill up first.

The organiser's list

 • Every passport issued under 10 years before arrival and valid 3 months after you leave
 • Flights for the whole group landing by 19:00 on Friday
 • Airport transfer booked, stragglers told about metro M4
 • Stag dinner room booked for the final headcount
 • Saturday club table booked, dress code posted in the group chat
 • Travel insurance checked for every activity, quad biking included
 • Late check-out requested for Sunday
 • Kitty per head agreed and collected before the flight

Questions the group chat asks

Is 2 days enough in Sofia for a stag do?

Yes: a 2-night weekend covers 1 activity day and 2 big nights, which is what most groups want. Rafting, quad biking and mountain day trips each take a full day, so they need a third night.

Does Sofia have good nightlife for a stag group?

Yes, and it runs late: clubs fill after midnight and peak around 2 to 3am. The catch is the door, so a big group books a table and dresses smart.

Who usually pays for a stag do?

The group does. Each lad pays his own way and the group splits the groom's share, so in a group of 10 on the €274 package, the 9 lads paying cover about €305 each. Agree it before anyone books, not at the airport.

Is Plovdiv or Sofia better for a stag weekend?

Sofia, for a 2-night weekend. The activities, the clubs and our planners are all in and around the capital, and splitting 48 hours between two cities means hours on the road. Plovdiv suits a separate trip.

What should we be careful of in Bulgaria?

Of the risks in the FCDO's Bulgaria advice, 3 matter most to a stag group: unlicensed airport taxis, overcharging in so-called gentlemen's clubs, and drunk and disorderly behaviour, which police may treat more seriously than in the UK. Use the official taxi desk or a booked transfer, fix club prices in advance, and keep it tame in the street.
